Cloning the Bottleneck
Scaling your judgement is not releasing it.
The pitch is a seductive one, and it is being made to founders everywhere. Train an intelligence on every decision you have ever taken, feed it how you weigh things and what you value, and it will begin to decide as you would, at scale, so that you are finally no longer the bottleneck the whole business waits on.
Read the promise closely, though, because it carries its own contradiction. If every meaningful decision in your company currently routes upward to you, the difficulty was never the speed at which you personally decide. It is that the business has a single source of judgement, and everything depends on it. Replicating that judgement into a model does not create a second source. It takes the single point of decision and industrialises it, then presents the industrialisation as freedom.
There is a deeper cost underneath, and it is the one that should give any founder pause. People do not arrive able to exercise judgement. They develop it in exactly one way, by being trusted to make real decisions, getting some of them wrong, and learning from the consequences. It is slow, it is occasionally expensive, and there is no shortcut. Route the decisions to a copy of you instead, and you remove that path entirely. The team never has to think at the level you think at, so it never learns to, and you have guaranteed, structurally, that the dependence you were trying to escape becomes permanent.
So the clone does not release the bottleneck. It runs the bottleneck faster while quietly ensuring nothing else in the organisation ever grows enough to relieve it. You get more decisions, made at greater speed, all still flowing from a single mind, and a group of capable adults who have been trained to bring you the question rather than the answer.
The genuine release valve is the harder and more human one, and it runs in the opposite direction to replication. It is the deliberate distribution of judgement to real people. It means separating the decisions that truly require you, the few that concern direction or carry irreversible consequences, from the many that only reach you out of habit. It means handing the second group away with the context and the authority to decide well, and then holding your nerve while others make those calls in their own way, sometimes differently from how you would have, occasionally less well, until the difference narrows and the capability becomes theirs.
What that builds is something a cloned mind can never be. It is a business that thinks in many places at once, that notices more than any single person could, that carries judgement in a dozen heads rather than concentrating it in one and copying it. That is not only more robust. It is more alive, and it is a great deal closer to what most people were trying to create when they started, which was a company with real people in it and not a single operator endlessly reproduced.
It will not surprise you that the personal side of this is the hard part. Handing over the last word asks a founder to be less central without feeling less important, and that knot sits in the person, not the process. It is why delegation frameworks so rarely hold on their own, and why this is work on the operator and the business at the same time. A business cannot outgrow the person running it, so the person has to change alongside the structure.
