The Wrong Pace

When everything is working and something is still off.

Part One

There is a version of this that most people never admit to out loud.

The career is intact. The responsibilities are being met. The income is there. And underneath all of it, at a frequency that is easy to override on a busy day, something does not feel quite right.

Not wrong enough to stop. Not urgent enough to mention. Just present, in the quieter moments, in the gap between finishing one thing and starting the next, in the moment of arriving somewhere you worked hard to reach and finding the feeling there is not the one you expected.

Most people who experience this do one of two things. They push harder, assuming the feeling is a motivation problem that output will solve. Or they wait, assuming it will pass once the next milestone lands.

Neither of these works. Because the feeling is not about insufficient achievement. It is about pace.

Not the pace of your calendar. The pace at which you were actually built to move, which for most high performers has never once been consciously chosen. It was accumulated. Inherited from the environments that rewarded you, from the metrics that defined you, from the momentum of a career that kept asking for more and received it.

The body notices this long before the mind does. It begins sending signals in the only language it has. Fatigue that does not resolve with rest. The sense of being permanently slightly on edge without a clear cause. A quality of absence in moments that should feel full.

These are not warning signs of something catastrophic. They are simply the body reporting that the pace it is being asked to sustain is not the pace it was designed for.

Part Two

It took me several years, and a fairly significant collapse, to understand what actually changes when you stop overriding the signal and start reading it properly.

Life does not need to be smaller. The ambition does not need to go. What needs to change is the operating pace, the speed at which you are running the engine relative to the speed at which the engine was actually designed to run.

This is not a wellness concept. It is a structural one. And it is different for every person, because every person's actual pace is different.
